The Mass Internment of Uyghurs,” Uyghur Human Rights Project, 2018.

Overview

This report published by the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) highlights the systemic discrimination of ethnic minorities, specifically Uyghurs in “East Turkestan” (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region). The report calls for the international community to press China to immediately release over a million Uyghurs detained in the Chinese “internment camps”.

The report proposes the following three actions:

  • Use of UN processes, specifically, China’s Universal Periodic Review to make Chinese officials answer questions on the internment camp system aimed at “solving” the Uyghur problem.
  • Adoption of a form of “Global Magnitsky Act.” And sanction Chines official complicit in human rights violations.
  • End forced the return of Uyghurs to China from other countries under pressure from the Chinese government.

The report also gives a detailed account of the camps in the region form both primary and secondary sources.

The intention is to “demonstrate the distress the internment camps have created at a human scale. UHRP found no Uyghur is safe from the camps: students, farmers, store keepers, religious figures, artists, soccer players, local government workers, women, men, children, teenagers, the elderly are among the interned.”

The report specifically highlights the continued persecution of Uyghur youth and the build-up of orphanages as continued escalation of tactics of repression in the region.
